Czasowniki modalne w teraźniejszości i przyszłości oraz ich funkcje:
1. zdolność / umiejętność - can
He can speak English.
Can he speak English?
He cannot speak English. / He can't speak English.
2. pozwolenie - can, may
You can write in ink.
You may leave your belongings in the hall.
3. pytanie o pozwolenie - can (mniej uprzejme) , could (bardziej uprzejme), may (bardziej oficjalne), might (gdy spodziewamy się braku pozwolenia)
Can I speak to Tom?
Could you tell me where the railway station is?
May I open the window?
Might I put it off till next week?
4. możliwość - may (prawdopodobne), might (mniej prawdopodobne), can (ogólna możliwość, a nie w konkretnym przypadku)
It may rain.
It might be cold tomorrow.
In winter roads can be slippery.
5. przymus - must (przymus wewnętrzny), have to (przymus zewnętrzny, narzucony przez innych, forma ta pełni rolę czasownika modalnego, choć nim nie jest)
I must study more to get better marks.
John has to clean his room.
6. brak przymusu - need not / needn't, not have to
We needn't get up so early tomorrow.
We do not have to write another essay.
7. zakaz - must not / mustn't, cannot / can't, may not / mayn't
You mustn't leave your luggage unattended.
You can't park here.
You may not take more than one suitcase.
8. rada / rekomendacja - should (słabsze niż must) , ought to (bardziej oficjalne), must (mocniejsze)
You should drink more mineral water. (powinieneś)
He shouldn't behave like that. (nie powinien)
We ought to spend more money on fresh vegetables. (powinniśmy)
You must see this film. (musisz)
9. przypuszczenie - will, should, ought to
Tom will know the answer.
He should have an extra key.
Mary ought to be in the office.
10. oferta / propozycja - shall
Shall I take these parcels for you?
11. dedukcja / wnioskownie - must (zapewne tak); cannot / can't (zapewne nie)
He worked realy hard. He must be tired.
The lights are out. She can't be at home.
